Purple and Fuchsia Ribbon Symbol for Sickle Cell Anemia

In 1999, the Have A Heart for Sickle Cell Anemia Foundation adopted a purple and fuchsia ribbon as a viable symbol to unite individuals interested in advancing the cause to improve the lives of individuals with sickle cell anemia. These colors were chosen because they adeptly symbolize the goals of the foundation.

Purple
The color of royalty and power signifies, the need for patients and their families to empower themselves with the courage and knowledge to take charge of this excruciating painfully illness.

Fuchsia
The color of excitement, signifies the joy of taking control and spreading the word that it will take everyone’s support is needed to be eradicated this illness during our lifetime.

Why Wear A Ribbon!
Wearing the ribbon hopefully will spark conversation about an inherited blood disorder that was first described in this country over 91 years ago. Although it is one of the most completely defined illnesses, there is no adequate treatment available. During the last 20 years, this illness has seen a big decline in funding and public awareness which has led many people to believe that this potentially life- threatening illness has been eradicated. But for the millions of sickle cell patients worldwide, this excruciating pain illness is a continued reality.
